Conference on Restoration of Wetlands in Nordic and Baltic Countries
Responsible organisation
2007 (English)Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
Abstract [en]

The Nordic-Baltic Wetlands Initiative (NorBalWet) was formally established in 2005 in co-operation with the Ramsar convention secretariat. In May 2006, in Hindås, the Swedish authorities held a seminar on the restoration of mires and wet forests. The conference in Norway in September 2006 was a further step in the development of NorBalWet as an organisation that can:“promote the objectives of the Ramsar Convention, thereby contributing to more effective conservation and wise use of wetlands and enhanced international wetlands co-operation in the region” (Norway, March 2005).The central theme of the September 2006 conference was the restoration of freshwater deltas, lakes and rivers. The field-trip looked at the Dokka delta in Lake Randsfjorden and the two rivers that flow into the delta. The delta is a good example of how our use of water influences wetlands.NorBalWet is by definition an international body, and the sharing of wetland expertise will involve co-operation with countries that lie outside of the NorBalWet region. This was emphasised at the Norwegian conference by the participation of an expert in river restoration from Ireland, and the leader of Wetland Link International, which is based in England. There were in all 34 participants from 10 countries.
