Evolving Funding Models of NewsPublishers and Public Service Media
2016 (English)In: Nordicom Information, ISSN 0349-5949, no 38, p. 25-29Article in journal (Other academic) Published
Abstract [en]

Newspaper publishers in multiple countries – including Nordics – have introduceddigital subscriptions to enhance their revenues. However, in most cases, paywalls onlycontribute a fraction to publishers’ total revenue. To compensate, companies, such asSchibsted, have invested in digital advertising businesses. There is evidence that newspublishers’ digital earnings are increasing and diversifying, and therefore new businessmodel frames are needed to evaluate these streams. As the public interest journalism isunder threat, new funding ideas – such as special levies – have started to gain ground.
