This paper was presented to the 14th Nordic Conference of Media and Communication Research, the “Political Copmmunication” Working Group, Kungälv, Sweden, 14–17 August 1999. The project presented in this paper is one of many funded by the large-scale “Power and Democracy in Denmark” research initiative commissioned and funded by the Danish Parliament in 1998. The research initiative is set up in an organisational framework that is completely independent of the political actors, who have left it entirely in the hands of an academic steering committee to define the research priorities and to award research grants.
