The main objective of the project "Monitoring and assessment of nutrient loads from agriculture in the Leningrad Oblast" has been to provide training and capacity building in methods related to monitoring and assessment of nutrient loss in the Leningrad Oblast. The first phase of the project was carried out in Estonia. The second phase was carried out in Norway during which also a final seminar was organised, including participants from Sweden, Finland, Leningrad Oblast, Estonia, Latvia, Kaliningrad and Norway. The project concluded that quantification of nutrient loss from agriculture in the Leningrad Oblast should be in line with methods used the Baltic and Scandinavian countries. This is important in the comparison of nutrient loss between countries to the Baltic Sea and the evaluation of mitigation measures. A network in the field of monitoring and assessment of nutrient loss from agricultural dominated catchments between researchers from Leningrad Oblast, Baltic and Scandinavian countries has given promising results and should continue. The necessity of a close linkage between monitoring programmes, extension services and farmer organization in obtaining improved water quality was clearly demonstrated in the project.
