There is an increasing demand for bio-energy crops, both in the energy sector, but increasingly also for fuel to the traffic sector. High-density plantations of fast-growing trees grown on fertile land for the production of bio-fuels are today realised at commercial scale in Sweden. In future, short rotation forestry (SRF) is likely to become increasingly important also in other Nordic countries. The report includes a literature survey, a chapter on landscape aspects in relation to SRF plantations on agricultural land as well as a summary of attitude studies based on questionnaires performed in various Nordic and Baltic countries. In addition, best-practice guidelines for sustainable biomass production in SRF plantations on agricultural land in Nordic-Baltic regions were developed and included into the report as an Appendix, it can be circulated as a separate document.
